A November 26, 2019 report from the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that life expectancy at birth for Americans has declined for 3 consecutive years since 2014. The findings show that US life expectancy increased from 1959 to 2016 from 69.9 year to 78.9 years.

US life expectancy reached a peak of 78.9 years in 2014, and lowered to 78.6 years in 2017. The study sites increased deaths due to drug overdoes, suicides, alcohol-related illnesses and obesity as having the largest impact on the decrease.
