There is Still Time to Act on Surprise Billing

Have you sent a letter to your members of Congress on surprise billing? Now that Congress is back from recess, health care legislation will be a top priority for Congress. That's why it's so important you write your members of Congress and ask them to ensure that any surprise billing legislation addresses the osteopathic profession's concerns. Act now and help protect your profession and your patients!

Tell Congress to include the following in any surprise billing legislation:

  • A fair process for independent dispute resolutions with the ability to bundle claims and no unnecessary limitations on physicians. The current threshold for arbitration included in legislation is still too high for many emergency room bills - which are one of the main sources of surprise billing.
  • Stronger network adequacy requirements for insurers. By strengthening insurance networks, we can address surprise billing at its root cause - increasingly narrow insurance networks.
  • Incorporate actual billed charges, as determined through an independent claims database, when calculating out-of-network payments to physicians.

Patients are suffering, and any surprise billing legislation that includes these points will ensure our patients are cared for, physicians are treated fairly, and access to care will not be put at further risk. Act now to encourage your members of Congress to pass surprise billing legislation and protect our patients!
